Ok the first thing you notice about Linux systems is that the desktop is different, You still have the usual menus, icons etc, but they are arranged differently. The two main desktop graphical environments are:

Music Formats

The two main formats for music on Linux are MP3 which is propriatory and ogg vorbis which is free. If you have problems with mp3 playback you need special software called codecs to decode these files, these codes and algorithms are patented. By using ogg vorbis, you are supporting freedom.

Allows a lot more control over your document look, and also allows you to concentrate on content rather than wasting time making your math formula look as you want it.

you would normally use a text editor such as vi or emacs to create the document then use LaTeX to process your document in to ps. pdf, or dvi formats.
